Auction record broken for price per carat for any gemstone by a Blue diamond

A beautiful and very rare Fancy Vivid Blue diamond, set as a ring, has been sold by Sotheby’s auction house in Geneva for US$4,955,097, setting a new world record price per carat for any gemstone at US$1,328,444 per carat. In October 2007, Sotheby’s sold a 6.04 carat Fancy Vivid Blue diamond in Hong Kong for US$7.98 million, giving it a per-carat price of US$1,321,495.

“We’ve had great success with important stones, with period pieces, and particularly with jewels of noble provenance. In addition to achieving a new world record price per carat for any gemstone at auction for the Fancy Vivid Blue diamond, we also sold 66 percent of lots above their high estimate – an impressive figure,” David Bennett, Chairman of Europe and the Middle East, Sotheby’s International Jewellery department.

Mariah Carey’s finger flashes with Nick Cannon’s engagement ring

Mariah Carey’s new boyfriend who is said to be her new husband gave her a fascinating engagement ring. A rep for the jeweler Jacob & Co. said that Cannon paid over $2.5 million for the 17-carat sparkler currently adorning Carey's paw.

“It has a square, emerald-cut fancy light-pink diamond as the center stone that is 10 carats,” the jewelrymaker says. "It is surrounded by 58 pink diamonds, with two half-moon diamonds on each side."

The ring was especially designed for Mariah by the jewellery company and is not the same ring that Cannon used when he proposed to Victoria's Secret model Selita Ebanks, as rumors used to have it.

The source says that Cannon "was in the boutique in the last couple of weeks" to retrieve the bauble.
